Michael
Michael’s journey is a profound example of how tailored support and self-advocacy can lead to a transformation in both personal and professional life. After spending much of his youth in various institutions and facing several misdiagnoses, Michael was eventually diagnosed with autism in his early teens. Seeking a path toward the independence he had long desired, he joined Goodwill’s group-supported employment program. His potential was quickly recognized by his supervisors, leading to his transition from a supported group setting to a position as an official Goodwill employee on the cleaning crew.
Through his time at Goodwill, Michael has mastered essential workplace skills, such as following complex directions and transitioning between tasks with minimal supervision. Today, he works largely independently, a milestone that has filled him with a sense of dignity and immense pride in his work. His supervisors describe him as a "star" employee whose dedication ensures the facilities are immaculate. For Michael, this job represents more than just a paycheck; it is the foundation for his ultimate goal of living in his own apartment and achieving full independence. His journey underscores the importance of advocating for oneself and the life-changing impact of a supportive work environment.
Mark
Mark’s story is a moving account of resilience and a testament to the power of adaptation in the face of life-altering challenges. A former truck driver who deeply valued the independence of the open road, Mark faced a profound transition after being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a progressive eye disease that eventually led to his license being revoked and him being declared legally blind. The shift from being a self-reliant provider to feeling dependent on others was a significant emotional hurdle for Mark, yet he remained committed to making personal "progression" to match the progression of his condition, ensuring he could continue to support and inspire his family.
Through a collaboration between his counselor and Goodwill, Mark was paired with a job developer who helped him translate his years of experience into a professional resume that highlighted his strengths rather than his limitations. This partnership opened the door to a new career at the Holy Family Retreat Center, where Mark quickly became known for his "can-do" attitude and infectious positivity. Today, Mark is celebrated as a positive force in his workplace, arriving each day with pride and a smile. His journey from his lowest point back to professional fulfillment serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and the right support, individuals can overcome any obstacle and continue to be accepted for who they are.
